This March, industry experts from around the world will speak on more than 800 sessions at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival. Today’s installment of the Session Spotlight features Skooks Pong’s (@skookspong) solo presentation, “The Future of Biometrics”.
SXSW: What will your session at SXSW address?
Pong: We typically associate biometrics with identity verification or security, but often overlooked are the vital insights and ease of use biometrics enable. This presentation will look at the future of biometrics: the technology it requires, intelligent experiences it can provide, and what will ultimately drive consumer adoption. I will address the life-changing capabilities this technology can unlock.
SXSW: What will attendees learn by hearing you speak?
Pong: Technology, as well as our current interaction paradigm, is progressing rapidly. Biometrics will play a significant role in this progression. Attendees of the session will come away with a better understanding of the types of experiences biometrics can unlock and how those experiences will shape the future of human and device interactions.
SXSW: How do you stay current regarding news and development in the area of biometrics?
Pong: I take time each day to peruse some of my favorite tech blogs and publications including Techcrunch, Gizmodo, Engadget, GigaOM, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Verge, Lifehacker, Slate, The Week...just to name a few. Additionally, I follow a myriad of industry publications and forward thinking leaders on Twitter.
SXSW: What’s something that’s not in your official bio, that will help us to get to know you better?
Pong: My name, Skooks, is short for Skookumchuck, a Chinook jargon word for strong water. Skookum = strong and Chuck = water. Also, I love to play in the mountains. Living in Seattle gives me easy access to some great outdoor playgrounds! In the winter, I'm chasing the best powder for skiing. During the other seasons, you'll find me hiking and on my motorcycle. Spending time in the mountains allows me to completely disconnect and clear my mind.
SXSW: What gadget can’t you live without?
Pong: Hands down, my favorite gadget right now is my iPhone5s. It is not only is capable of keeping me connected on multiple of levels, it is my point-and-shoot and video camera, as well as personal entertainment device. In my opinion, no other device on the market today is as easy to use or designed as well.
SXSW: At SXSW, we talk a lot about creativity and innovation. Who or what inspires your creativity?
Pong: My curiosity fuels my creativity. I am always curious to learn how things work – new technologies, new processes. I love when I can find a way to combine the old and new to make something new and innovative.
SXSW: Does the future of technology excite or frighten you?
Pong: It excites me! I consider myself an early adopter and look forward to new technology improving quality of life.
