Need a place to stay in Austin during the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival? Yes, all official SXSW hotel blocks are sold out during the March 6-12 timeframe. But many alternative housing options remain available for you after you purchase your badge for the event.
Austinites have been enthusiastic about offering their homes as short-term rentals -- so a little legwork on sites like HomeAway.com, VRBO.com or FlipKey.com might get you the perfect bungalow or condominium. Hint: search for locations like Downtown, East 6th/East Caesar Chavez, Clarksville, West Campus, South Congress, South First, South Lamar, and the zip codes 78704, 78703, 78701 and 78702.
Also, a little research on individual hotel websites could turn up a room that will suit you to a T. Or check online travel sites like Expedia, Travelocity, or Kayak. The SXSW group rate won’t be available to you, but the accommodations are the important thing. For other alternative housing ideas contact the SXSW Housing Department by email or by phone (512-467-7979).
If you end up staying outside downtown, know that Capitol Metro (Austin’s public transport) supplements bus service and increases urban rail during SXSW. This urban rail system (pictured above right) provides the prefect way to get to the Austin Convention Center from outlying areas -- without having to worry about downtown parking.
One way or another, remember that purchasing a registration and taking part in the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival provides a fantastic opportunity to take your career to the next level. So, spend a few minutes investigating these alternative lodging options and you’ll be completely set for taking advantage of all that the event has to offer!
