A former teacher lugs his bulky 3D printer in and out of Austin bars at SXSW 2009. Some shrug him off as a novelty act. Others freak out. Some just order another shot...to fill the cup he just printed for them. Hat tip to @mims for the insightful post this Sunday on Quartz. An enlightening piece (for me) on patents role in the rise and economics of 3D printing. The nut of it? As more IP barriers fall and the cost of this tech comes down and it’s a bright /accelerating future. Awesome. It’s also a future that 2013 SXSW Interactive Festival Opening Remarks speaker Bre Pettis saw coming while printing shot glasses at Maggie Mae’s. Four years later the Hacker/Maker/DIY part of our community is on the rise and as more barriers fall we know only the only limit to progress will the creativity of our community. Earl Grey Tea hot anyone?
If you think you have a handle on the hottest trends for 2014 and beyond, then we think that SXSW attendees want to hear from you. Enter your speaking proposal in the SXSW PanelPicker before the end-of-day deadline on Friday, July 26.
