"I'm on a mission from God," Taye Cannon deadpanned before breaking into laughter. "Well, maybe not exactly, but it kinda felt that way at first, and it still does sometimes." Ok, so the Blues Brothers reference is a little cringe-worthy, but it's an apt description for the path Cannon traveled assembling Austin-based ROXY ROCA, although the Blues Brothers story starts off in jail, and Taye's starts in, well, Alabama. Close enough.
Fueled by a summer spent living in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, far removed from the insular peninsula of Halifax, KESTRELS' guitarist/vocalist Chad Peck wrote a record that thoroughly mines out concepts of nostalgia and memory.
“How many of ya’ll are familiar with the League of Extraordinary G’z?” was the question posed by Bavu Blakes, indie rap veteran and reigning godfather of the Austin Texas Hip Hop scene, as he stood on a dimly lit stage in the summer of 2009 introducing a highly anticipated debut live performance. The crowd of locals exploded. They were familiar.
Indie-folk pop band from Austin, Texas, began as an acoustic duo consisting of Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins singing ukulele love songs written and shared over red wine and old photographs. With northern U.S. parks and fields as their backdrop and a tour van as their practice studio, Kelsey and Alexander formed their first ten songs, flawlessly documenting the ups and downs of a less than idealistic yet enchanting romance.
The Crookes consist of George Waite, Daniel Hopewell, Russell Bates and Tom Dakin. The Sheffield-based newpop dreamers have announced their umpteenth tour of a sizzingly busy career. The past three years have seen them release two full albums, one mini album and a slew of jaggedly romantic indiepop singles, as well as tour their tyres off in hot pursuit of international glory. Autumn 2012 sees no let up in their handsomely hectic schedule to promote their new 'Hold Fast' album.
Chali 2na MC. Musician. Actor. Painter. Renaissance Man. Chali 2na has done it all. From his days growing up on the hardscrabble streets of Chicago's south side, to his subsequent explosion onto Los Angeles' burgeoning hip-hop scene, to his tenure as MC for seminal hip-hop group Jurassic 5, Chali epitomizes the portrait of a 21st century artist. To be sure, with his unmistakable, beloved baritone, Chali has firmly established himself as one of the most distinctive, charismatic personalities not just in hip-hop, but music in general.
Bestial Mouths formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. Drawing from a large base of influences including the early industrial, synthpunk, and goth scenes of the late 70's and early 80's, founders Lynette Cerezo and Christopher Myrick sought to explore new imagery in creating an original aesthetic that avoided some of the cliches typically prevalent in "dark" music. The band currently consists of Gustavo Aldana (synthesizers and programming) and Jessica Reuter (drums) in addition to Cerezo (vocals) and Myrick (synthesizers).
Not long ago, the members of Motive were shredding through jazz lead sheets and getting carted across the U.S. and Europe to showcase their young talent. Nowadays, Motive populates a different scene. These Seattle transplants, turned Brooklynites, emerged from a Clinton Hill, Brooklyn practice space onto stages around the city and are rapidly taking NYC -- and the internet -- by storm.
It's funny. The Tontons don't have a readily available mainstream band to make an off-the-cuff comparison, so in this space we won't tell you they sound like Indie Flavor Of The Week or Noted And Weighty Classic Rock Name. The Tontons simply sound like the Tontons. That sounds like false bluster, but anyone who has been tracking them since 2008 will tell you the same thing. Up front is Asli Omar, that vocal vixen who can make men and rock nerds alike quake in their boots.
For Sean Falyon, being everywhere means more than showing up at every show or party he hears about. Sure, the Philadelphia MC has made his name by remaining ubiquitous since his 2004 migration to Atlanta, but Falyon’s constant presence goes beyond appearances. His goal is to use his numerous talents to stay at the top of fans’ minds no matter where he and his trademark beard are physically located.
