The LP Questionnaire/Pick Three - Philip Ekström of The Mary Onettes

Written by Linda Park | Monday Mar 3rd, 2014

The LP Questionnaire with Philip Ekström of The Mary OnettesThe Mary Onettes hail from Sweden, where everyone is fresh faced and attractive. I told today's LPQ participant, Philip Ekström that hanging around in Stockholm was like stepping inside a face soap commercial.

Many fine musics are made in Scandinavia and The Mary Onettes are no exception. Music Festival GM and honorary Korean James Minor keeps sending me videos of the band for me to enjoy and their sweet new wave sounds that owe a bit to The Cure and Dream Academy do engage and delight.

Singer/songwriter Philip is obsessed with space and old photographs. He lives in Göteborg, loves skateboarding and recently broke a rib pursuing this endeavor.

His favorite skate movie is Goldfish. Favorite female is Kate Bush. Favorite male is Paddy McAloon.

Please to enjoy his LPQ, why don't you?

The LP Questionnaire
Name: Philip Ekström
Do you have any nicknames? My name is Philip Ekström. I don’t have any nicknames right now.. But one of my closest friends used to call me Fisken (the fish). I really don’t know why.. I guess he thought I looked like a fish sometimes.

1. Pretend you’re 15. Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend. It is 1996. This was actually just when I had one of my first serious relationships. This girl was obsessed with The Cure. And pretty much immediately I started to listen to Cure to. And I was so hooked. I remember I was going on a schooltrip at that time to Austria, for one week.. And here are the three songs I would’ve left on a mixtape for her..

The Cure - Same Deep Water As You
Jimi Hendrix - Angel
The Sundays - Goodbye

2. Which evil villain would make the best President? Skeletor from Masters Of The Universe. He would probably do a lot of bad things but really cool to have a president who’s riding a lilac panther.

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Actually I did read Donald Duck pockets a lot as a child. But mostly because there was a funny joke written on the bottom of every page.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? Maybe to control people's minds. Then I can make a lot of bad people stop doing what they do. Stop wars and things like that…

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? Obsessions. My life is all about being obsessed with things.

Pick Three
Small Black: Been liking them since they released the first EP.

Future Islands: Been having their song The Fountain on playlist for a while. Great song.

Pure Bathing Culture: I love their Dire Strait-ish guitars... Gotta see the person who plays guitar.
