SXSW 2014 Music Speaker: Rebecca Gates

Very briefly, what do you do and what is your session about?

I'm an artist and activist investigating social and cultural design. I work in sound, from Rock 'n' Roll music to developing the role and vocabulary of listening in cities. The panel is going to discuss practical, inventive ways musicians can bring our progressive and punk values into our music business, and opportunities for others to assist with that endeavour.

How/why did you get started in the music industry?

I worked in non-commercial, community radio for 8 years.

How many years have you attended/spoke at SXSW in the past? If this is your first time at SXSW, what are you expecting?

First SXSW was in 1994 when The Spinanes played, and have been back too many times to mention. This is my first time as a member of a panel and moderator.

Best thing that’s happened in music in the last year?

There is no "best" only more of the better.

Favorite new app/service/tech development in music?

Default settings on software and synths are so REAL!

What’s the biggest issue facing the music business today? Can it be overcome?

Ego, Money-Grubbing, Theft of Cultural Capital, Gender inequality re: presentation and opportunities in the music biz.

What’s the last live show you saw that floored you?

Han Bennik (ICP Orchestra and more...) drum workshop

Favorite moment/weirdest thing you saw from a past SXSW?

I love running into friends I don't get to see very often. It's the best.

What artist(s) are you most looking forward to seeing perform at SXSW 2014?

TInariwen, Superchunk, Ex Hex, Big Freedia, plus anything with three or more male backup dancers, preferably K-POP

Tacos or BBQ?

Silly...both. TACOS = AM, BBQ = PM
