The SXSW Music and Media Conference is one of the largest, most influential, and most anticipated music events of the year. Last year, SXSW Music drew over 12,000 music industry professionals for compelling panels, industry discussions, demo listening sessions, trade show exhibits, and – of course - five nights of music by no less than 1,987 acts hailing from 42 different countries, performing in 86 venues in downtown Austin, Texas. 2010, the 24th consecutive year of the Festival and Conference, will showcase more music from the best new talent and established artists alike, provide more opportunities to network, have more unique panels and artist interviews – in short, will offer even compelling reasons to make Austin a “can’t miss” destination in March.

SXSW Music Festival happens all across Austin - in bars, clubs, halls, parks and even in a historical museum. Here’s a look at some of the special places you can see and hear music – often for free – outside the traditional venue.
George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center – 1165 Angelina St.
Located in the heart of Austin’s historic east side, the Carver Museum has played host to a variety of free community oriented SXSW events in the past few years. From Gospel to hip-hop to r&b to screenings of musical documentaries from around the world, the Carver Museum is a unique and beautiful place to experience music at SXSW.
Auditorium Shores – 950 W. Riverside Dr.
Located on the beautiful banks of Lady Bird Lake, Auditorium Shores is where SXSW presents some of its biggest and best bands – all for free – year after year. Thursday, Friday and Saturday night of each SXSW Music Festival, Auditorium Shores is open and free to the public from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. It’s a genuine outdoor music festival within a festival! Past acts have included Erykah Badu, Spoon, Talib Kweli, Explosions in the Sky, M Ward, Raul Malo, Lyrics Born, Biscuit Brothers, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Fastball, Del the Funkee Homosapien, The Bodeans, and more.
