Last spring (shortly after its founder Kevin Systrom spoke at the 2012 SXSW Interactive Festival), Instagram was purchased by Facebook in an amazing $2 billion deal. This spring (shortly after its founder David Karp spoke at the 2013 SXSW Interactive Festival), Tumblr has been bought by Yahoo for a cool $1.1. billion. Meanwhile, our crystal ball wonders what high-profile startup founder speaking at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival will be acquired next spring. The success of Instagram and Tumblr should make the competition for speaking slots in Austin next March even more intense.
