David J originated from Northampton, England in the late 1970s with gothic rock band Bauhaus. Although he was the bassist in Bauhaus (and later in Love and Rockets), Haskins began writing music for his solo career even before the band broke up in 1983. He released his first solo album, titled Etiquette of Violence, that same year.
The record had been out of print from 1990 until November of last year after being picked up and reissued by Cherry Red Records. The reissue of the influential 1980s post-punk album includes the remastered record, home demos, and unreleased tracks. David J’s music is known for being dark and avant-garde - Fender recently issued a statement on the reissued album, calling it “an effort that was every bit as dark as [Bauhaus], if not even more chilling.”
David J last released an original studio album in 2011, but he is reportedly putting the finishing touches on a new album for 2014. While you’re waiting to see him at SXSW 2014, listen for David J and more SXSW 2014 bands on SXSWfm. Tune in here on your desktop, or download the mobile app here!
