Hip Hop worlds collide on Trae Tha Truth's ‘Wid it,’ featuring Problem and Freddie Gibbs (SXSW showcasing artists from very different parts of the US). The track, produced by the Bay Area’s World’s Freshest (aka DJ Fresh), is the first from Trae and Fresh’ s upcoming The Tonite Show project. Blending a club-friendly Bay Area beat (complete with finger snaps) with Trae’s leaned out H-Town flow, Problem’s Compton edge, and Gibbs’ raw gangster rhymes, it is a real intersection of style, sound and scene.
Though the combination seems surprising, 'Wid It' actually follows a series of separate collaborations by the four artists. Gibbs and Problem worked together with World’s Freshest on the 2012 track, ‘On Me,’ and the two just dropped the video for their most recent track, ‘One Eighty Seven’ (from Gibbs’ ESGN mixtape), while Trae and World’s Freshest’s 7-track The Tonite Show comes out January 21st.
The Tonite Show is part of a real return-to-form for Trae Tha Truth. While recent years have not been easy for Trae - he lost his brother to gun violence, was targeted in a drive-by shooting, and split from cousin and longtime collaborator Z-Ro - the Houston legend has come out on top. After signing to T.I.’s Grand Hustle label in 2012, he channeled the pain of the past into a series of new projects, including November’s critically acclaimed I Am King mixtape. Banned, his highly anticipated full-length album, is due for release later this year.
