Chances are you’ve heard of Trae Tha Truth. The rapper out of Houston, Texas is the leader of hip-hop duo ABN and an official member of the Screwed Up Click, formerly led by DJ Screw. He’s put out five studio albums and countless mixtapes since his debut, Losing Composure, was released in 2003. So the release of his highly anticipated new mixtape earlier this week should be business as usual, right? Not exactly.
Trae Tha Truth’s newest mixtape, entitled I Am King, was released on a bittersweet day for the rapper. Trae dropped I Am King on the second anniversary of the death of his good friend Money Clip D, who was fatally shot outside of a Houston club on November 25, 2011. The rapper decided to give his fans this free mixtape this past Monday because that’s what Clip would’ve wanted. Trae sums it up while talking to MTV News about the mixtape: “I feel like it’s only right for me to feed them and give them a gift and one of my biggest fans - it’s crazy - was Clip.”
It’s a bumpin’ gift indeed - one that only adds more anticipation to Trae Tha Truth’s upcoming studio album, Banned, which is to be released next year. Hear for yourself on Tha Fixx Radio today at 12 & 6 CST, only on SXSWfm. Tune in here on your mobile device or desktop.
