Watch 2016 SXSW Selections: Documentary Shorts

Submissions for SXSW 2017 are closed, y’all! That means my brain is beginning to melt as I do my best to break my screening record from last season. So… many… shorts! So many in fact, we figured it would be a great time to showcase even more by bringing together all the shorts we screened in 2016 that are now available to watch online!

This week we’re focussing on docs. These shorts were originally screened as part of SXSW 2016 Documentary Shorts Competition. Now, some of them are available for you to watch below. Check out more great short films from past editions of the event on our SXSW Film Festival Vimeo Channel!

THE BLACK BELT
Director: Margaret Brown
In September 2015, Alabama closed 31 DMVs, which largely impacted voters in Alabama's Black Belt. To combat these closures, the Secretary of State issued a Mobile Voter Registration unit, which traveled to every county to issue voter IDs.

DOLLHOUSE
Director: Terri Timely
An aesthetically lavish portrait of a “reborn” artist who strives for maximum verisimilitude in her creation of newborn baby dolls.

LIKE
Director: Garrett Bradley
At the intersection of internet popularity and economic gain a booming industry grows in Bangladesh based on Likes.

MISS ME: THE ARTFUL VANDAL
Director: Mohammad Gorjestani
Renowned Montreal street artist, MissMe, gives us an unprecedented inside view into her life and her quest for self-liberation and authenticity, as she uses her art to take aim at the objectification of women in advertising.

THE SHINING STAR OF LOSERS EVERYWHERE
Director: Mickey Duzyj
Japanese racehorse Haru Urara became a national icon after enduring a losing streak of epic proportions. Dubbed "The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere", she was a symbol of perseverance and inspiration during a time of economic crisis.

THESE C*CKSUCKING TEARS
Director: Dan Taberski
The gritty, fearless voice behind the world's first and only gay-themed country music album, 40 years after its release.
