It's been a busy week for our friend, neighbor and SXSW veteran Willie Nelson. On Saturday night, Willie returned to the original Austin City Limits soundstage to be inducted into the iconic television program's new Hall of Fame. He performed his own classic compositions like "Crazy" and "Funny How Time Slips Away" with Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovett, then returned to the stage later to play the blues with Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Doyle Bramhall II and his son, Lukas Nelson.
Then it was a quick Sunday run down to Houston to appear at a BBQ with Wendy Davis in support of her campaign for Texas Governor, and then yesterday Willie was presented his 5th Degree Black Belt in the Korean martial art of Gong Kwon Yu Sul. Not bad for a guy who celebrates his 81st birthday with a concert tonight out at The Backyard, an outdoor venue in the Texas Hill Country just west of Austin.
Willie's most recent SXSW performance was this year at the iTunes Music Festival held at ACL Live at the Moody Theatre, of which Willie is one of the owners. Willie's never-ending tour resumes next week in South Carolina, with a full slate of dates from May through September, and he's got a new album called Band of Brothers due out later this year. Happy birthday, Willie!
