Under the big tent that is Americana World Headquarters, you’ll find a blend of folk and rock and country and blues and soul. And you’ll find all that in the music of Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Their new album, Lickety Split, has just been released. “Robert Randolph is an American Original,” says Don Was, the great musician/producer and now president of Randolph’s new label, Blue Note Records. “He has mastered what is, arguably, the most complex instrument in the world [pedal steel] and developed a unique voice that is equal parts street-corner church and Bonnaroo. This album finally captures the energy and excitement of his legendary live performances.”
This is the first studio album in three years for Randolph. Too much time on the road took its toll on Randolph’s enthusiasm for the music. Giving himself a break from a decade of 280+ dates a year allowed him to relax and gain a new appreciation for his instrument. “I’ve become more in love with my guitar now,” says Robert, who uses words like “joy,” “freedom,” and “energy” when discussing Lickety Split.
