Submission Tips: Screening Sections and Awards

Many people wonder how they can apply for a specific section within the SXSW Film Festival program, and what awards their films are eligible for.

The Short Answer: You can’t apply for specific sections and most of the sections have an award associated with them.

The Long Answer: The screening sections at SXSW Film are handcrafted and curated from each year’s selections. We strive to reach a balance within each section and within the program as a whole. Each and every film is placed in its section according to how it fits into the puzzle. It is an extremely delicate process that we put a lot of time and thought into. To find out more about the SXSW Film Screening Sections head over here.

All of the sections, except Headliners and Special Events, have the opportunity to receive an Audience Award selected through a public screening balloting process. Our Jury Awards are given to features in our Narrative and Documentary Competitions, Short Film sections, and a few special awards that reach across the screening sections.
