Last week, SXSW Gaming had the pleasure of co-sponsoring the Game On Austin event with the Austin Chronicle. I had an immense amount of fun speaking with all the attendees and the indie developers who were gracious enough to share their projects for the event. The event itself, and the huge turnout, really helped to illustrate the importance of indie gaming to the community. Fans came out in droves to see indie games created by some amazing local companies, and the I found the outpouring of support to be almost overwhelming in its warmth.
SXSW Gaming strives to give back to our community, both to fans of games, and to the hardworking developers that create them. I realize that a good portion of my blogs as of late have focused on the SXSW Gaming Awards, and the SXSW Gamer's Voice Category, but I want to continue to highlight this very special new part of the SXSW Gaming world.
It's our first time producing such a fun and prestigious award show, and while I love all of the categories, from Best SFX to Game of the Year, I am especially excited for the chance to give the community and the fans a way to reward the hardworking indie developers out there. These are the people who truly do what they do for the love of the craft, knowing that there are no guarantees for fame (or infamy) or sometimes even profit. The SXSW Gamer's Voice category allows indie developers the chance to submit their labors of love for a chance to win the inaugural award at the 2014 SXSW Gaming Awards.
There is no submission fee, all types of games are welcome, and getting accepted as one of the top 10 games earns developers a free space on the SXSW Gaming Expo floor. The Expo floor features some of the best and most amazing software, hardware, tabletop games, comics, and toys you'll find anywhere. For an aspiring game developer, a seasoned veteran, or a startup independent studio, free space equals free press, free exposure, and pretty amazing quality time with the fans.
If you are an interested indie game developer, the deadline to enter your game is Friday, December 13 at 11:59pm. CT.
