Safe travels to the many members of the SXSW Interactive community who are heading to (or who are already at) Black Rock for Burning Man 2013. We are often reminded of the connections between the two events, particularly when we read the amazing "What is Burning Man" essay from SXSW Advisory Board member and frequent panelist Molly Steenson. As described in her memorable essay about the transformative Labor Day weekend event:
You belong here and you participate. You're not the weirdest kid in the classroom — there's always somebody there who's thought up something you never even considered. You're there to breathe art. Imagine an ice sculpture emitting glacial music — in the desert. Imagine the man, greeting you, neon and benevolence, watching over the community. You're here to build a community that needs you and relies on you.
Also, be sure to check out the various speaking proposals related to Burning Man in the 2014 SXSW PanelPicker.
These proposals include:
- Building a Cellular Network At Burning Man
- Growth & Identity: A Dialogue With Burning Man
- Roots of Fight Club, Burning Man and Flash Mobs
- Scaling Culture: Growth Doesn't Mean Selling Out
- Permission Engines: Facilitating Creativity
If you like any (or all) of these Burning Man-related SXSW PanelPicker proposals, then please vote for them (and comment on them) before the polls close at the end of the day on Friday, September 6. In other words, just enough time to pop up the lap top and browse the PanelPicker once you get back from Black Rock next week, your life slightly changed in one form or another.
