Learn how to build culture in a distributed company at SXSW 2014

Unlike any other digital conference or festival, the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin will feature more than 800 sessions for participants from around the globe. Today’s installment of the Session Spotlight features the panel “How To Build Culture In A Distributed Company”. The panel will be moderated by Mischa Nachtigal, a Product Manager for Upworthy based in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can follow Nachtigal at @mischa where he tweets about tech, comedy, sports, social justice, movies, and random observations.

SXSW: Simply put, what will you be covering in your session?
Nachtigal: We will talk about how building culture in distributed companies differs from shared-office companies, as well as other fun parts and challenges of this new office environment.

SXSW: Who do you think will enjoy this session? What type of registrant should attend?
Nachtigal: People who are just starting or thinking about joining or founding a distributed company will want to attend. Existing companies that are considering going distributed could also benefit from this discussion. SXSW registrants should attend because it starts a great practical discussion that applies to many companies, and it's going to be a common working environment in the future, especially in the tech industry. It’s a session that’s even clear cut enough for beginners.

SXSW: What knowledge will attendees walk away with?
Nachtigal: Attendees will have great tips and ideas of how to work with other people in a distributed company and have a better vision of what the day-to-day looks like. They’ll also understand how a distributed company functions and grows.

SXSW: How do you stay current with developments in your industry?
Nachtigal: I read Mother Jones, The Wall Street Journal, Valleywag, PandoDaily and Benedict Evans.

SXSW: What is the best article or web post that you have read in relation to this topic?
Nachtigal: Remote by the 37 Signals people is decent, but this post is also nice.

SXSW: What do you think will be the biggest trend at SXSW this year?
Nachtigal: I think apps that use mobile sensors in clever ways will be the biggest trend.

SXSW: Finally, what can you tell us about yourself that will make people want to come see you speak?
Nachtigal: I do a great Richard Nixon impersonation.
