Christina Gagnier is one of the leaders of the fight against revenge porn

More than 800 sessions covering a huge variety of topics will occur at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival. This installment of the Session Spotlight examines “Without Their Consent: Ending Revenge Porn”, a core conversation led by Christina Gagnier (@gagnier), a lawyer and tech policy geek based in San Francisco.

SXSW: Please give us a better idea of what the “Without Their Consent: Ending Revenge Porn” session will tackle.
Gagnier: Across the country, there is an increasingly widespread problem of abusers and perpetrators posting images and video footage online as a tactic of abuse, harassment, bullying and extortion. The images and videos may be of consensual nudity or sexual activities that were taken with or without the victim’s consent. As seen in recent high-profile cases, they can also be images or footage of physical and/or sexual assaults. Regardless of the situation, when images and video are posted online of someone without their consent as a tactic of abuse, action needs to be taken to protect the victim and hold the abuser accountable. This session will explore this phenomenon and share information about what the technology community can do.

SXSW: What kinds of people will want to attend this session?
Gagnier: This session is appropriate for anyone attending SXSW. From individuals who may themselves have been victims or know those who have been or just someone who wants to know what we mean by "revenge porn." The solutions to this issue are not just policy-oriented. We need everyone in the tech community being aware and supporting those who work to combat it.

SXSW: If a SXSW Interactive registrant is unfamiliar with this topic, will he / she be able to follow the discussion?
Gagnier: Yes, the session will set up what the issue is and then jump into a discussion. The goal is to ensure that the conversation is inclusive.

SXSW: What do you hope to gain from speaking at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival?
Gagnier: The goal is to gain awareness of the issues surrounding revenge porn and to get more people involved in advocacy around the matter.

SXSW: Not necessarily related to your speaking topic at SXSW, what is your favorite book from the last year and why?
Gagnier: My favorite book was Clive Thompson's Smarter Than You Think. Not only is everything he writes amazing, but this book was spot on.

SXSW: Not necessarily related to your speaking topic at SXSW, what is your favorite movie from the last year and why?
Gagnier: Downloaded. As a copyright lawyer, it's appropriate.

SXSW: What is your dream job and why?
Gagnier: If California had a Chief Innovation Officer, I'd want that job.
