Read the SXSW session recommendations from Teresa VanDeusen

Teresa VanDeusen has been involved with SXSW Interactive since 2004 and currently serves on the event’s Advisory Board. She lives in Austin and experiments actively exploring life in the Cyber Desert, the importance of Artificial Stupidity (vs AI), searching for holes in metadata, and finding solutions in interesting places. Read below for five of the sessions that excite her most at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival.

  • It's Complicated: Teens' Social Media Practices (Saturday, March 8 from 12:30 - 1:30)
If danah boyd is speaking, I will be there to listen! She could make the worldwide distribution of diapers fascinating and the insights would be applicable to all sorts of industries. If you are like me and get super excited about peer reviewed genius, don't miss Dana. The teens are coming, the teens are coming!

  • A Conversation with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson (Saturday, March 8 from 2:00 - 3:00)
As the battle between Science and religion rages across classrooms and legislatures I find great solace and inspiration in the words of Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. If I can't get into Exhibit Hall 5, I will find a nice quiet simulcast to enjoy the event. Note: the keynotes are powerful and can sometimes set or change the tone of the conference. If you are thinking about skipping the keynotes at SXSW 2014, don't!

  • Crowdsourcing Diplomacy (Sunday, March 9 from 11:00 - 12:00)
I am one of those geeks who believes cyberspace holds the answers that will save the world, so I won't be passing up the State Department's panel on their geospatial cyberinfrastructure, and how they are using innovation to leverage volunteers and respond to disasters. The presenters are particularly rich in experience and their ideas could be applied to all sorts of problems.

  • We Will Not Be Shushed: Guerrilla Library Advocacy (Sunday, March 9 from 3:30 - 4:30)
Librarians have always been a part of SXSW Interactive and they are key to protecting our rights to privacy on the ground, in our neighborhood, every day (and they are darn good at it too!). For anyone who needs a strategy to protect an idea, these librarians will inspire you! The core conversation format is a welcome change of pace in the midst of panels and presentations and it's nice to hear a whole room of contributors sharing ideas (as opposed to that one person who makes a statement instead of a question during panel Q&A).

  • Relieving Frustration: Porn & User Experience (Monday, March 10 from 5:00 - 6:00)
Looking for a dynamic solution to enhance your online business ? Hit up a porn panel for cutting-edge innovation from the fastest responding industry on the web! Trust me, the porn industry has done a bang up job of retaining customers, integrating ads, and supplying never ending content while others flounder to keep up. Not to mention it's kind of fun to tell your boss you got that great idea from a bunch of f*ckers at SXSW.
