Killer Mike, a hip-hop veteran who's been making music for over 10 years now, released a new collaborative record with fellow rapper El-P, entitled Run the Jewels, this past July on Fool’s Gold Records. The rapper made his debut all the way back in 2000 on the Outkast album, Stankonia. Since then, Killer Mike has collaborated with numerous rappers, including Jay-Z. He has also put out six studio albums as a solo artist, with the most recent, R.A.P. Music, released in 2012.
According to a review on NME, Killer Mike and El-P’s latest offering, the aforementioned Run the Jewels, rivals Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne as “the hip-hop collaboration of the decade.” Pitchfork’s review of the album states that this collaboration “makes a kind of retroactive sense going back to their early 2000s solo debuts.” The review cites the similarities between Killer Mike’s debut, Monster, and El-P’s debut, Fantastic Damage, as well as their similarities in style and recent collaborations.
The hip-hop duo, aptly named Run the Jewels, just wrapped up their US tour two weeks ago at New York City’s Webster Hall. Rolling Stone’s review of the show paints the duo in a very positive light: “Through the evening’s sharp edges...it was refreshing to see two stalwart rappers act so positive.” Run the Jewels is available for free download via Fool’s Gold Records.
