At only 29 years old, Sophia Amoruso has become one of the most prominent figures in retail with the success of her fashion empire, Nasty Gal. Having first sparked a cult following in her vintage venture on eBay seven years ago, Amoruso has now grown the brand into an online retail haven with a progressive following of fashion risk-takers. Nasty Gal is one of the fastest-growing private companies in the world—earning it the No. 11 spot on the 2012 Inc. 500.
Amoruso has revolutionized marketing with a business built almost entirely on unpaid social media from day one. She continues to build her distinct aesthetic across social media and today has over a million followers on Facebook and on Instagram.
This coming May, Amoruso is set to debut her highly anticipated, first book titled #GIRLBOSS. Part memoir and part business book with an edge, #GIRLBOSS is a sassy and irreverent look into how she organically grew her business from the ground up.
Inc. senior writer Christine Lagorio-Chafkin will join Amoruso to discuss the bold trajectory of Nasty Gal—from starting on eBay to attracting investors, raising $50 million in funding, and scaling her business at a lightning pace. Oh, and she's just getting started: Amoruso was honored in Inc.'s 2013 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30.
At SXSW 2014, the "Nasty Gal: Turning Heads While Turning Profits" session will occur on Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. in Ballroom D on the top floor of the Austin Convention Center. All sessions that occur in Ballroom D are convergence and therefore open to all Interactive, Film, Gold and Platinum badgeholders.
