Four on the Floor: Bands from Brighton

Written by Ariel Miller | Monday, Jan 20, 2014

For this week’s Four on the Floor, we’re hopping across the pond to a city known for its pebble beaches, historic carnival pier, eclectic art scene and thriving nightlife: Brighton, UK.

We’re fortunate to have a number of bands from this chilly seaside getaway, spanning the gamut of rock, pop and electronic sounds. What’s better? Almost all of them will be giving their first-ever SXSW performances. The Brits are bringing it this year.

Brighton-based Anushka pairs the sweet, soulful vocals of singer-songwriter Victoria Port with the effervescent dance beats of producer Max Wheeler. In a recent article in The Guardian the duo was described as having a “roughness and polish in equal measure.” The unlikely pair, already making waves in the UK underground dance scene, will be performing at SXSW for the first time this year.

This rock duo packs a serious punch, with emotion-fueled vocals that hit straight to the core. Fans of Queens of the Stoneage will love Royal Blood’s honest, bold music. Another SXSW newcomer, they’ve been called “potentially the best rock duo since the White Stripes.”

Front man Thomas Savage leads this guitar-pop quartet, mesmerizing listeners with his unique exposed vocals that are all at once raw, warbling and completely beautiful. Originally formed in 2010, Kins released their first full-length, self-titled album last July. Dissonant and almost a little unsettling, listening to Kins brings about the slight discomfort that’s inevitable with any kind of deep self-reflection.

The only SXSW veterans in our roundup this week, Fear of Men was born of an art school project. Jessica Weiss (vocals and guitar) had been setting ambient soundtracks to short films when these recordings caught the attention of Daniel Falvey (guitar). The two quickly became friends based on a shared love of music and Michael Miles (drums) and Robyn Edwards (bass) rounded out the group soon after.
