I’m not sure where to even start with describing the sound of Marijuana Deathsquads. The song above, titled “Crosstown Crippler,” has an ambient intro that the band quickly builds on, adding light autotuned vocals and drums. Marijuana Deathsquads then kicks into high gear with a mashup of psychedelic electronic sounds, aggressive drums, and harsher vocals for a thrilling (and equally weird) ending to their set at North Door during SXSW 2014.
Minneapolis band Marijuana Deathsquads clearly favor an avant-garde and improvised style, which makes them incredibly hard to categorize. So, we won’t. The band, shown above performing at the the Totally Gross National Product label showcase, frequently collaborates with Har Mar Superstar and Poliça frontwoman Channy Leaneagh, so don’t be surprised if you spot them on stage.
Along with “Crosstown Crippler” above, two more songs from this set are now available for viewing on our YouTube channel, including “Goldan” and “Ewok Sadness” (a personal favorite song title of mine.) Enjoy!
