Four on the Floor: Artists from Kingdom Animalia

Written by Rory Burbeck | Thursday Nov 5th, 2015

We love all animals here at SXSW, and many of us tend to spend a little too much time sending cute animal pictures around the office (have you followed @EmrgencyKittens on Twitter yet?!).

Every year, we inevitably end up with more than several artists whose names are also names of animals. Here are four examples for the 2016 SXSW Music Festival.

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes (London, UK-England)

Former Gallows and Pure Love frontman Frank Carter is back in full force, returning to the abrasive punk-rock style of the former with The Rattlesnakes. The band formed just this year and quickly released an EP (Rotten) followed by a full-length (Blossom) in August. Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes have a run of shows in Europe and the UK leading up to their performance at SXSW in March.
RIYL: Refused, Ceremony

A Giant Dog (Austin, TX)

The band recently signed to Merge Records and are currently working their third full-length release ahead of their first SXSW appearance as an official performer.
RIYL: Bass Drum of Death, FIDLAR

Bird Dog (Los Angeles, CA)

The band produces a really well-done mix between folk-leaning sections and more active indie rock passages, best illustrated by their single “The Ocean and the Sea” above. Bird Dog received a shout-out from The Guardian earlier this week and will release their debut EP, titled Misty Shrub, in January.
RIYL: Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses

Judah & the Lion (Nashville, TN)

Judah Akers teamed up with Brian MacDonald and Nate Zuercher in 2011 while the trio were attending Belmont University. Their latest release, last year’s Kids These Days, peaked at #4 on the US Folk chart and #2 on the US Heatseekers, which was followed by a performance on the Late Show with David Letterman at the beginning of this year.
RIYL: Trampled by Turtles, Greensky Bluegrass

Register to attend the 30th annual SXSW Music Festival, March 15-20, 2016 in Austin. And keep up with the list of showcasing artists here.
