Tha Fixx Artist: Bun B

Written by Rory Burbeck | Wednesday, Sep 18, 2013

Tha Fixx Radio is back on the air today with a ton of great hip-hop, but we want to focus on Bun B, the rapper behind what B. Hobbs, the host of Tha Fixx, calls the “biggest track of the week.”

More on the new track, “Fire,” in a minute. The first thing you should know about Bun B is that he hails from Port Arthur, Texas. Bun B and the late Pimp C made up the legendary hip-hop duo, UGK. Widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers in history, he also has an academic side: Bun B is a professor of “Religion and Hip-Hop Culture” at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

The MC has been a part of numerous collaborations that, coincidentally, are some of my favorite hip-hop tracks ever. The most memorable for me is a track called “Paranoid,” which he did with Talib Kweli on Reflection Eternal’s second album. At SXSW 2012, Black Star, the legendary hip-hop duo of Talib Kweli and Mos Def, was scheduled to make an appearance on top of a parking garage. Sadly, Mos Def could not make it and the crowd was naturally disappointed. What did Bun B do? He came out, the two MCs nailed “Paranoid”, and the crowd’s energy was revived. Easily one of my personal favorite SXSW moments.

Rap A Lot Records announced that Bun B will release a new record this October. The album, entitled Trill 4 Life, will be the first released as part of the record label’s recently announced multi-year distribution deal with SONY Red.

B. Hobbs has a track off that album for you on this week’s episode of Tha Fixx Radio on SXSWfm. The track, which features 2 Chainz and Rick Ross by the way, is called “Fire” and you can hear it on SXSWfm today at 12pm, 6pm, and 12am CDT.
