Tha Fixx Spotlight: Hopsin

Hopsin Performing at SXSW 2013

You wouldn’t know it when you first listen to Hopsin, but the rapper from Panorama City, California was an extra on quite a few Disney Channel TV shows as a teenager. His career has taken a different turn since then, to say the least. Since being signed to the infamous Ruthless Records in 2007 - and subsequently leaving two years later to start his own label - Hopsin has enjoyed success with Funk Volume. The rapper has accumulated over 100,000 YouTube subscribers and plenty of traction on social media.

Hopsin’s recent popularity is well-deserved: he’s talented. His style and flow are unlike anything I’ve heard in a long time. When Hopsin raps over his classic-sounding west coast beats, he’s direct and honest, reminiscent of early Eminem. But I think what truly sets him apart is how well he can change the inflection of his voice to convey different moods and perspectives.

Those of you attending SXSW this coming March will have the opportunity to see Hopsin: the rapper was included in Round One of 2014 SXSW Music Festival Artists. While you’re waiting for SXSW, you can expect a highly anticipated third studio album, entitled Knock Madness and co-produced by Travis Barker, later this month. In the meantime, check out Tha Fixx Radio today on SXSWfm to hear a track off the upcoming album.

Tha Fixx airs today (Wednesday) at 12pm, 6pm, & 12am CDT only on SXSWfm. Tune in here on your mobile device or desktop!
