“Democratizing AI for Individuals & Organizations” Featured Session at SXSW 2018 [Video]

“Just like a child, AI is growing up, and we need to learn how to be good parents.” - Joanne Chen

In Democratizing AI for Individuals & Organizations at SXSW 2018, Partner at Foundation Capital Joanne Chen moderates a thoughtful conversation with Director of Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Lab and Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud Dr. Fei-Fei Li and CEO of Shift7 and former VP at Google Megan Smith, centered around shepherding the next phase of development in AI technology by focusing on inclusionary practices.

"As an educator, I focus a lot on how we diversify tomorrow’s AI technologists, and that is a critical part democratization for me." - Dr. Fei-Fei Li

The conversation focuses on the idea that if we as a community are able to break down barriers to entry for communities of potential creators of AI, the technologies that we create will be more inclusive. The speakers discuss education programs for underrepresented social groups and ways of debugging machine-learned biases from AI, as well as a myriad of other issues relating to realizing the full potential of AI in the future.

"AI is good at describing the world as it is today with all of its biases, but it does not know how the world should be." - Joanne Chen
