The Short Answer: While most sections do have an award associated with them, you CANNOT apply for specific sections.

The Long Answer: You cannot apply for specific screening sections since every section at the SXSW Film Festival is handcrafted and curated from each year’s selections. We strive to reach a balance within each screening category and within the program as a whole and put a lot of time and thought into the section decisions.

All screening sections, except Special Events, receive an Audience Award selected through a public screening balloting process. In addition, SXSW Jury Awards are given to features in our Narrative and Documentary Competitions and to all Short Film sections. Oh yes, and there’s always a few special awards that reach across all screening sections. Read more info about the 2016 SXSW Film Awards Ceremony.

Don’t forget! Our Late Deadline for film submissions is Tuesday, November 3. This will be our final submission deadline for SXSW 2016, so get your film ready and submit now! To learn more about submitting to SXSW, watch our How To Submit Your Film video and browse our Film Submission FAQ.
