2013 SXSW Video Archive: Rachel Sklar Attacks the Tech Industry's Unequal Male Female Ratio

Written by Hugh Forrest | October 7, 2013

Rachel Sklar has emerged as one of the strongest voices against the male-dominated world of technology, continually reminding readers about the negative consequences of the unequal distribution of power between men and women in this industry.

This issue also served as the focus of the "Change the Ratio" panel that she led at the 2013 SXSW Interactive Festival. Watch the video of this panel to learn about ongoing efforts to create a more equitable distribution of the sexes. This session also featured Kathleen Warner, the COO of Startup America (now re-named as Up Global). Warner offered a glimpse of progress, telling attendees that 42% of the companies in the Startup America are led by women.

Other speakers for "Change the Ratio" included Kristen Jones (Digital Content Executive), Merici Vinton (strategist, Made By Many, formerly Obama Digital), and Christina Wallace (Director, Startup Institute New York and Founder, Quincy Apparel).

At SXSW Interactive, we are strong believers in the importance of a more equal male / female balance. To learn more about our position on diversity (in all its forms), please click on the Community Focus section of this website.
